It represents the distance between Britain and Newfoundland, the destination of the first Transatlantic telegraph cable- Sir Gooch from Bedlington played an important part in this. It explores the concept of mapping and its relation to geometry through the ages - Eristothanes in ancient Greece first calculated distance between the parallel rays of the sun in relation to the earth’s circumference
